Budapest - Hungary’s lawmakers rejected constitutional amendments to make
'Holocaust denial' a punishable offense. The proposals, put forth by
MP Tamas Suchman (photo), vice president of the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities,
for the ruling Socialist party, attracted fewer than half the votes needed to adopt a constitutional
amendment. The attempt at introducing the legislation that failed was made in response to
operations that marred the last 'Holocaust Remembrance
Day' .
