Damascus - On
Thursday, Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and
Syrian president
Bashar Assad discussed the threat of
Israeli attacks on Syria, Lebanon, Palestinians and
Iran (photo). Ahmadinejad's warm meetings with his Syrian counterpart as well as with the leaders of the Lebanese Hezbollah and Palestinian Hamas have ruffled many feathers in the US, Europe and Israel.
They sent a clear message: We stand united - an attack on one of us is an attack on all.
Israel and the US administration have been lobbying the Middle East and the world's influential capitals in the hope of isolating Iran and passing another UN Security Council resolution that would include biting sanctions against
Tehran. Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu
visited Moscow, but Russia said that Moscow is not got going to work on sanctions or measures which could lead to the political or economic or financial isolation of
Iran.
Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak
will visit Beijing. But China is pushing back against any new sanctions for Iran, saying greater diplomatic efforts are
needed. Both the Chinese and Russian leadership are uneasy with the new
USrael escalation in the Islamic world.
