The freedom of historical debate is under attack by the memory police of the German justice minister Brigitte Zypries

Last weekend, a group of historians and writers led by the French Professor Pierre Nora, has published in " Le Monde" the "Appel de Blois", maintaining that in a free country it is not the business of any political authority to define historical truth and to restrict the liberty of the historian by penal sanctions. Pierre Nora is a Professor of History at the " École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS)" in Paris and member of the French Academy. Already in 1948, Nora co-founded the review "Imprudence", along with Pierre Emmanuel Vidal-Naquet

. Nora started three years ago to oppose to the law of the February 23rd 2005 bearing recognition in school programs of the positive role of the French presence overseas.
